A local
concern
“The change of name to Bardon Hebrides has been well received
both by our workforce and customers who recognise the commitment we
have to the Hebrides and our close relationship with the local
community. This, together with the national Bardon brand for
quality products and services, will strengthen our business further
and continue to deliver success.”
Angus Macleod
Western Isles Director
The heritage and culture around our sites have
significantly influenced the way our businesses are managed. Bardon
Hebrides is the Western Isles’ leading aggregates, road contracting
and surfacing provider. Our community is also our customer; this is
never more so than on a small island.
All stone produced remains on the islands thus
supporting self-sufficiency in construction materials and adding to
the local economy through jobs and community investment. The annual
sales of aggregate have increased from an average of 30,000 tonnes
in the early 1950s to over 410,000 tonnes in 2006.
From resurfacing the island’s airport runway
and aprons, to creating road causeways that link small communities
together, our materials are used to connect the community with the
mainland and with each other. When the community is also customer,
they see more closely the balance of the impact on the environment
from extraction with the use of materials for local
improvements.
Bardon Hebrides is one of three Aggregate
Industries island businesses, Bardon Vectis (Isle of Wight) and
Ronez (Channel Islands) which also closely recognise their own
island’s heritage bringing with it a strong market focus. The name
change in 2007 to Bardon Hebrides reinforces the business as a
local concern by recognising its sense of place.
