Environmental management is the keystone in our strategy to be
more sustainable. From this we have built our approaches to carbon
management, biodiversity and community. This basic discipline has
remained critical to coping with the changes around us and
delivering improved performance since the birth of Aggregate
Industries.
When Aggregate Industries was formed in 1997,
environmental issues within business were in their infancy, but by
1999 we had achieved our first certification to ISO14001. In 2007,
we have environmental management system (EMS) certification across
most of the business and we have kept this at a similar pace to the
overall growth of the company.
The EMS has been modified as the world about
us changes. In the past ten years we have responded to many new or
amended pieces of legislation and to changing expectations of our
stakeholders. Through our approach to environmental management we
have established a level of expertise that has provided us with the
confidence to influence the direction of the sustainability agenda.
In particular, it is the ability to draw upon accurate and current
data to support our position.
This basis is now crucial as we move forwards
into markets where more, and more accurate, information on the
environmental performance of our products is being requested.
We still have room to improve our performance
but, with the structure of the EMS well established, we have a
solid foundation from which to build. From our ability to address
the shortcomings of newly acquired businesses to the introduction
of new initiatives, we are ready to address the challenges of the
world about us.
